STROKE: RememberThe 1st Three Letters.... S.T.R.
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ... she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die ... they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this... A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke ... totally . He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and t hen getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE:
Remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
--If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke, Stick out Your Tongue NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other , that is also an indication of a stroke.
(I recieved this on an e-mail and thought it would be of use to us)

Clinic Gossip
Well, I wasn't sure what to write about. So, I decided to write about the "gossip" I have heard about.
-Penny went to Boston to visit her brother 2 weeks ago. Did you know that Penny and Jen (in the lab) go kayaking all the time-you should see their tans!
-Liz has a new granddaughter, she arrived on Thursday morning. Her name is Mikiah.
Joy is going to have a little bundle of joy in February!
-Debra T is going to have a grandbaby in a few months. Haven't heard whether it is a girl or a boy. Right now, she is in California visiting her mom and sister.
-Dr. Soucie has a new running mate, Mike. He officially starts next month I believe. Soucie will keep him running!
-Jonathan is helping Dr. Beckett-his wife is expecting a baby too!
-Echo has started training with us. She is a CNA who is originally from Sterling but has been in Texas the past 14 year (I think is what she said) and is now back living with her mom in Sterling.
-Jan is back today after her knee surgery, she seems to be doing good.
-Marilyns dad seems to be doing better after his stay at EIRMC. He doesn't want to miss coffee, Marilyn made him stay home a day or so, but he was bound and determined to go!
-Sergei is our new computer person, so no more paging Karrie, we now page Sergei!
If you think of any other gossip or anything fun or interesting you want to share, let me know and I will post it for you!

Relay pictures from Marilyn
DR. TALAMPAS
Here is a letter from Rachel-
So, what's new in Blackfoot? I'm sure all the snow has melted by now! My in-laws just left a month ago after a 3 month vacation here. My brother might be coming here for the holidays. No, I'm not working yet and I'm still not pregnant although we're ready for another one, even David! Enjoy your summer and hello to everyone.
Take care, Rachel & Conrad
(They are moving (AGAIN!) to Wellington (near West Palm Beach) by September. Conrad found a job there as a hospitalist. I'm hoping we'll settle there for a while because I'm getting tired of moving. We'll still be renting a house though. Another chapter begins...
